I feel like both in the show and the books there was a purposefully mysterious air around Ianto. We never learnt anything about him and in ‘Twilight Streets’, when Bilis reaches his mind,he says “So much noise in your head, and so many histories. I wonder if they ever knew you, Ianto. I wonder if Jack Harkness ever knew you”; in ‘The Sin Eaters’ there are also implication for it.
